https://esla.wi.gov/PortalCommunityLogin

All building permits are to be submitted at the Town Hall (in person or via the mail). For New Construction Permits, call the Deputy Clerk at 262.966.2651 prior to dropping the permit off.

The Electric Permit Application, the Plumbing Permit Application, and the HVAC Permit Application should be submitted with the Building Permit Application, if applicable.

Building permits are required in the Town of Merton for most improvement projects on your property with the following exceptions:

  • Siding
  • Re-shingling
  • Replacing Windows or Doors of the same size
  • Installing Gutters or Downspouts above grade

If your property is within 1,000 feet of a lake or 300 feet of a river or stream, your property is in Shoreland Jurisdiction and you should contact Waukesha County Parks & Land Use at (262) 548-7790 to determine if a Zoning Permit is required for your project.

A Preliminary Site Evaluation (PSE) is required from the Waukesha County Environmental Health Division prior to the issuance of a Zoning Permit and/or a Building Permit to assure the existing private sewage system is operating properly and the minimum setback distances are maintained from the improvement to the existing sewage systems when the following improvements are proposed:

  • Remodeling or Building Addition
  • Change in Use
  • Accessory Structure
  • Swimming Pool
  • Deck

Call (262) 966-2469 during regular Town office hours when the project is ready for inspection.  The Building Inspector has 48 hours to complete most inspections. Final inspections may require additional time.
